Radicchio isn’t normally the easiest to grow — but these two Italian-bred varieties form dense, beautiful hearts every autumn, without any forcing.
In this video, I share the results of growing both the round Palla Rossa type (506TT) and the long Treviso type (206TT) using the no dig method, which helps conserve soil moisture even during a dry summer.
I sowed them 10th July and we planted the seedlings 1st August in summer drought, after broad beans. We watered them in and occasionally watered by hand, until it rained in September.
Radicchio are not easy to grow. But these two varieties grow dense and beautiful hearts every autumn, without forcing. 506TT grows round hearts of Palla Rossa type, while 206TT grows long ones of the Treviso type.
Radicchio offers a wonderful bitter-sweet flavour, delicious raw or roasted, and adds striking colour to the autumn garden as well as to your food. These varieties are available from Tamar Organics (UK), who import them from Europe.
