Flea beetles! Every summer brings a different main pest, and this year in the UK, brassicas are getting hit hard. Flea beetles have loved the dry conditions — and you can see the damage in the form of many small holes.
Here at Homeacres, I show how a cover of fine mesh, raised on hoops, helps keep many beetles out. Some still wriggle through, especially when it's dry and numbers are high.
Watering helps too – if you have it. My water butts are mostly empty, so I’m using mains water when I can. The Brussels sprouts are getting water; the carrots aren’t – and that helps them grow sweeter.
The carrots were the original planting in this bed, sown on 28th March. The Brussels were planted between them mid-June – classic no dig succession planting. All grown in compost-mulched soil, no digging needed.
