This is some of the best training you can do with a thoroughbred race horse and a helmet cam makes it much more fun as you can see for yourself. This race horse has been fitted with a Polar heart rate monitor to record the work load performed up this hill compared to the racetrack . He is a turf horse, but has done ok on fast dirt tracks. He loves this hill and thrives on training. When trot back down the hill, he gets to jumping and throwing his head up to the point of being a little rank, as you can see in this video. Since I know this horse well, it didn't bother me. He was able to max out his heart rate at only a 30 mph or 2 min/mile to 233 beats a minute when he has to reach racing speeds at around 38-45 mph at 5 furlongs or more to get his heart rate that high before. This training exercise of combining multiple sprints, uphill, 2x weekly or every 3-4 days, galloping uphill and trotting uphill builds more hind end muscle and power than conventional training on a racetrack. It also can be more beneficial to train away from the track as some horses mentally fall apart doing the same track routine day after day. Training on grass is also much better for their joints. If horses are to race on dirt, they should be conditioned equally to do so as the shock of the less forgiving surface conditions the bones and soft tissue for the harder surfaces. In a perfect world we would only train and race on turf, but unfortunately it's not that way and if we must train on the surfaces we will be racing on. My opinion, if you wanted it, is that we would have an exponential decrease in catastrophic breakdowns if we only raced on turf in North America. I also recommend using a Polar equine heart rate monitor on your race horses when training so you can get specific data where the horse is as far as fitness goes. This is one of the best tools to detect problems and prevention of injury. Once you know your horse's heart rate patterns, you can detect subtle changes, which may indicate a serous problem.
