First Light is a series created by Kishima Arts Foundation featuring young musicians presenting rarely performed repertoire of Indian Art music and stories of their musical lineage. In this session, Lakshmipriya Rangarajan, an up and coming Carnatic vocalist, was the featured artiste. This was a morning performance held at and supported by Bangalore International Centre and the Kshirsagar Apte Foundation.
Lakshmipriya commenced her recital with a Cauka varṇam of Rāmasvāmi Dīkṣita in the Rāga Śrīrañjani, set to Ādi tāḷa.
In this varṇam, there is sāhitya for the Muktāyi svara as well as the ciṭṭasvaras. This varṇam also has another intriguing feature - There are 4 ciṭṭasvaras in this varṇam out of which the first one alone has been composed by Rāmasvāmi Dīkṣita. The second, third and the fourth ciṭṭasvaras have been composed by Śyāma Śāstri, Cinnasvāmi Dīkṣita and Muttusvāmi Dīkṣita respectively.
Lakshmipriya was accompanied by Madan Mohan N on violin, Sunil Subramanya on mridangam and Shamith S Gowda on ghatam.
