I was surprised that the cover design didn't reflect the character I had imagined from the way she is described within the books. I’m interested in Adaptational attractiveness has there you been other books where a character has been physically changed to suit marketing?It was fun to change the book cover design and have a go at exploring the what I imagined Felicity to look like. For this video I used Krita a free on-line tool which allows you to do most the things photoshop does without paying a monthly subscription! Imagines I referenced. Queer Words are Fruit and Reeds, 2022 Oliver Bliss, Soundscape #Book Draw 2022-11-26 | Queer Words are Fruit and Reeds, 2022 Oliver Bliss, MIxed media textile, black light, sound art and film This is the film and audio used for Queer Words are Fruti and Reeds, The flaps of the installation are liftable for you to view the inside. The work explores the nature of myths and legends as they change through time. It explores the visible threads of narratives conveyed through history as they become altered, preserved or erased. The two figurative soft sculptures in this piece relate to the Greek myth of love between two youths, Kalamos and Karpos. The story is told in Nonnus's Dionysiaca. The pair enjoyed swimming and racing; one day tragedy occurs, Karpos drowns, and in his grief Kalamos commits suicide. In the story Kalamos is turned into a water reed ‘Calamus’. The sound of rustling reeds is thought to be Kalamos sighing and lamenting Karpos forever. ‘Then Calamos gave his form to the reeds which took his name and like substance; and Carpos grew up as the fruit of the earth.’ It has been suggested that this myth inspired the title for Walt Whitman's "Calamus" poems in Leaves of Grass. Whitman’s poem, in turn, inspired David Hockney with his painting “We Two Boys Together Clinging” a title line lifted directly from one Whitman’s poems. The soundscape created for this piece immerses the viewer into a private experience of the work. A reading of “We Two Boys Together Clinging” has been slowed down to distort the reading and create a new experience, essentially ‘queering’ how the words are received and understood by the viewer. “Queer Words are Fruit and Reeds” is a culmination of research through experimentation during a Residency with Holborne Open. During the residency Oliver Bliss was able to test approaches such as suspending work and creating soft sculptures. He also experimented with tactile drawing approaches (drawing through touch) and embraced sustainability, through constructing the figures from rejected charity shop clothes. The combination of the soundscape and installation creates a new experience connecting the legend of Kalamos and Karpos and Walt Whitman’s poem. Investigation into the poems and the legend were discovered through David Hockney’s painting “We Two Boys Together Clinging.” The process of critical play and experimentation during the residency of Holborne Open enabled time and reflection to draw these elements together. #SoftLads workshops led by The Word Association #Book Draw 2022-06-29 | #SoftLads This video provides an overview of the workshops which were delivered by The Word Association at the Royal Porcelain Works in Worcester and Stryx Gallery during SHOUT! Festival in Birmingham.After two years in development, this series of large pictorial tapestries has been created by Oliver Bliss. The style of dress, the items around these figures would provide clues and symbols to a particular time and status. People depicted with tapestry perpetuate their gender and status through styles of clothing, and symbols of power and wealth to reflect who they are. #SoftLads explores facial and body tattoo portraits of men on Instagram celebrating how they curate themselves online. The work explores how and why these men use social media as a means of expressing their masculine identity and self. During October 2021, the public were invited to take part in workshops at Henry Sandon Hall. Those who took part explored the themes within the tapestries to produce their own creative-writing responses. The workshops were run by Holly Winter-Hughes director of The Word Association. The Word Association specialise in facilitating writing workshops that result in publishing poetic and literary works created by their participants. They are committed to empowering under-represented and marginalised groups of people to explore their own feelings, concerns, and life experiences through the development of their writing skills. The project has been financially supported through funding from Curator Space, The Bransford Trust, Arts Council England and Worcester City Council.
