(AP) Live from Apalachee High School and live from Grady Memorial hospital following an incident. A Georgia sheriff's office says injuries have been reported after a school shooting at a high school. The school was put on lockdown Wednesday, and students gathered in its football stadium. The sheriff's office says one suspect is in custody but didn't immediately provide further details. Helicopter video from WSB-TV showed dozens of law enforcement and emergency vehicles surrounding Apalachee High School in Barrow County, about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta.

CHICAGO — Before U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock arrived at the Georgia Democratic delegation’s kickoff pep rally in downtown Chicago on Monday, the pastor-turned-politician’s presence was already felt.
Delegates who crowded into the Hyatt Regency ballroom gushed about an up-close chance to hear Warnock before he addressed the Democratic National Convention. Several wore vintage “Vote Warnock” T-shirts dating to the 2020 campaign that made him a national figure.
And a few rushed to take pictures with Warnock before he was whisked to another event, part of a busy schedule of more than a dozen appearances this week around Chicago as he embraces his role as a sought-after Democratic ally of Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I’m all in. We can’t afford to do anything less in this election,” Warnock said during a quieter moment in the hotel’s bowels after the crowd receded.
“The choice in this election could not be more stark. I’m prepared to barnstorm all across Georgia — I know a little bit, after all, about how to win Georgia. But I plan to move across our country to send Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to the White House.”
Not long ago, Warnock’s vocal championing of the party’s ticket might have seemed surprising, at least to those who caught his campaign trail messaging.

No national agency comprehensively tracks police chases, and varying state laws make direct comparisons a challenge. But an analysis of federal data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests reason for concern in Georgia. In addition to analyzing GSP’s raw data from 2019-2023, the AJC’s investigation analyzed national data from 2018-2022, the latest year of federal data available, and found that people died in Georgia more often as a result of pursuits on roadways than in any other state.
The federal data recorded 201 pursuit fatalities for law enforcement agencies in Georgia over those five years. GSP reported 68 pursuit fatalities involving the agency in that period, according to GSP data. While the federal data from the NHTSA and the data obtained from GSP came from separate sources, the AJC’s analysis of each reached a similar conclusion: No other agency in Georgia is associated with as many fatal pursuits.

Atlantan and UGA grad, NBC Olympic host Maria Taylor’s career soars
By Ken Sugiura
In her line of work, Maria Taylor can’t climb much higher than she’s already ascended.
This fall, she’ll begin her third season as full-time studio host of NBC’s “Football Night in America,” the most watched prime-time show on television. Starting next Friday, the former two-sport athlete at Georgia (and before that a star at Centennial High) will be a fixture on screens everywhere as she’ll be NBC’s late-night host at the Paris Olympics.
Her first major assignment will be during the Opening Ceremonies, which in a highly anticipated change will not be in a stadium but instead on the Seine River. Taylor will be stationed on the boat carrying the U.S. team. It is literally the first time any broadcaster has ever had this assignment, and NBC selected Taylor for it.

Separate national polls conducted for Reuters and NPR both showed Harris and former President Donald Trump locked in a neck-and-neck race now that President Joe Biden has ended his campaign.
A Landmark Communications poll of 400 likely Georgia voters — the first conducted in the state since Biden’s withdrawal — also showed a razor-tight matchup.

And the Georgia Democrat didn’t rule out whether he would accept a hypothetical offer to serve as Harris’ running mate.
Warnock was the featured guest Monday at a “Politically Georgia” live event in Savannah, just hours after Biden announced he would end his campaign and back Harris in November.

Meet the Georgia delegates to the Republican National Convention
By Greg Bluestein
Georgia will send 59 delegates and 56 alternate delegates to the Republican National Convention to formally nominate former President Donald Trump in his comeback bid against President Joe Biden.
The four-day convention will take on a more somber tone after an assassination attempt left a suspected shooter and a spectator dead at Donald Trump’s rally Saturday in rural Pennsylvania.
Before the rally, Georgia delegates were expecting a triumphant party celebrating the former president, who has staked a solid single-digit lead over Biden in Georgia. And though Georgia dealt Trump devastating political and legal setbacks, he dominated the state’s March primary.

The olive branch was extended at a ballroom at the Lake Lawn Resort in rural Wisconsin, where most of the roughly 100 Georgia delegates and alternates — some of the state’s most loyal Trump devotees — showered the governor with applause when he promised a united front.
“We’re a red state, and we’re going to be a red state in ‘24,” Kemp told the state’s delegation to the Republican National Convention. “And we’re going to turn around and be a red state when we have an open governor’s race in 2026.”

JD Vance’s law school roommate says he is the most ‘vindictive and angry option’ for addressing inequality in America
By Caleb Groves
This story was republished after former President Donald Trump’s announced JD Vance as his running mate. This story was originally published on July 12, 2024.
With Donald Trump’s pick for a running mate expected in the coming days, State Sen. Josh McLaurin joined “Politically Georgia” to discuss how his former college roommate, U.S. Sen. JD Vance, went from calling the former president “America’s Hitler” to the shortlist of possible vice presidential picks.
During his time at Yale Law School, McLaurin said he thought of the Ohio senator as a very thoughtful and charismatic person who had a chance at reinventing what it meant to be a Republican. However, as he and Vance grew apart, the Democrat from Sandy Springs said he noticed changes in his roommate.
“He was a lot more critical and cynical of the law school environment than I was to a point that made me uncomfortable, and that was part of the reason we didn’t stay close,” McLaurin said.

It took more than a decade before MTV began releasing new episodes of its show Cribs after going off air in 2010. But the show left its mark and gave Hawks forward Mo Gueye the inspiration to channel that energy when he gave The Atlanta Journal-Constitution a tour of the team’s practice facility recently.
The Hawks practice facility, located in Brookhaven, serves as a home away from home for players. When they’re not on the road, they’ll take advantage of the trappings of the Emory Sports Medicine Complex.

NBA draft prospect Zaccharie Risacher gives Hawks the highest ceiling
Many draft analysts and NBA insiders seem to lean toward French wing Zaccharie Risacher as the front-runner for who the Hawks may pick. In Monday’s episode of the Hawks Report podcast presented by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer broke down why experts project Risacher as the likely top pick in this month’s draft.
“I would probably lean toward Risacher right now, just being that A) in general across the league, these games are being decided on the perimeter,” Fischer said. “We’re watching it in the (NBA Finals), right now, with Luka Doncic and Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown being these big wings that can go and get anywhere on the floor anytime they want. And the Hawks don’t exactly have a surefire, clear-cut, like wing of the future.”
