On March 23, 2026 (late Sunday night, around 11:40 p.m.), an Air Canada Express regional jet (Flight 8646, a CRJ-900 from Montreal carrying 72 passengers and 4 crew) collided with a Port Authority fire truck on LaGuardia Airport's Runway 4 while landing at high speed (93–105 mph). The truck was responding to a separate odor emergency on a United Airlines flight. The impact destroyed the cockpit, claiming lives of both the pilot and co-pilot; approximately 41 passengers and crew (plus two firefighters) were injured, some seriously, though most were later released from hospitals. The crash prompted the full closure of LGA for several hours, causing widespread flight disruptions, and marked the first fatal incident at the airport in over 30 years. The NTSB is investigating, with air traffic control audio indicating a possible communication error.
