Punjab’s political battle over the Panthic vote is gaining momentum, with the issue of Sikh prisoners once again taking centre stage.
The AAP government’s changed position on parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara, convicted in the 1995 assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, has sparked a fresh political debate. Hawara’s family and supporters sought 10-day parole on humanitarian grounds, citing his ailing mother. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann subsequently approached Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on the matter.
The development comes amid growing competition among AAP, Shiromani Akali Dal, Waris Punjab De and other Panthic political forces ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections.
