I decided to match it again just because I'd like the quality of all my Wii Punch Out fights to be consistent with each other.

Dragon Chan is a fight that also tends to cause headaches when it comes to full game runs, because if he wants to, he can take nearly 5 seconds away from you compared to an optimal fight. If youre going for an individual level record on this fight, hes not too bad thankfully. His first phase requires a decent bit of execution, but thankfully that part has no luck requirements.
The fight starts out by holding Up for the first frame of the fight, then for the next frame, you want to throw a left gut punch, followed by buffering a second gut punch. For these next 2 right gut punches, you need to do very small delays for both of them so that he gets far enough in his punch animation to where he doesnt block them.
Then, you want to do a delayed left gut punch to counter the hook hes about to throw, then buffer a right gut punch as hes stunned, then press down and IMMEDIATELY press B to buffer a right gut punch while simultaneously cancelling your duck into a quick duck. This will end his stun early, while getting you everything you need in order to set up phase 2 for the KO.
Now, for this super knockdown, you can easily buffer a right jab into an uppercut, but since Im optimizing real time for these uploads, I wanted to change it to a low super. You can buffer a rapid jab (which is where you press the A button, then press it again within 6 frames of it starting) into a duck, which you cancel into a low super by pressing A as soon as you see your character start to duck, but I didnt give it enough time to learn it before I landed the fight without it, lol. I ended up just hitting this manually, which is a 3 frame window to where the timer still says 5.86 when the low super lands. This adjustment saves a measly 2 frames of real-time compared to an uppercut super knockdown, which is the smallest difference of frames between an uppercut or low super knockdown in the entire game.
When Dragon gets up, hes going to do one of 3 patterns, which will either be him doing 3 kicks on random sides (this is the worst pattern), a heal with a slow delay, or a heal with a fast delay, which is the one that we need. Thankfully, the execution for this buffer has gotten a lot more straightforward recently. All you have to do is hold Up+Left when the fight starts, and keep holding it for the entire phase. Simply press and hold A as soon as your characters dodge begins, and your super will hit Dragon on the first possible frame that hes vulnerable when he does the fast heal!
Back when I first matched the TAS on this fight, I didnt realize the game prioritized the Left and Up inputs in such a way to where Up doesnt cancel the Lefts full dodge input, so I would always do this awkward input where I would hold Left only, then very quickly switch to Up+A on the very last couple of frames of the dodge, which I remember costing me attempts back when I originally did this. So shout outs to Universe004 for that really nice simplification for that buffer strategy!

So uh... I beat McHazards published TAS of this fight by 1 frame (39.38); Im literally not kidding. McHazard is already hard at work updating the current TAS of this game to accommodate the new frame saved.
The missing frame was something I discovered when I was TASing this fight for myself to research possible frame perfect buffers for the fight. Out of habit, I had found the timer address and tested each of the 3 fights in Doc Louiss Punch Out to see if any of them had the potential to vary depending on when you skip the cutscene. Warm-up and Training did not... however... Sparring did.
If you wait at least ~150 frames into his intro cutscene before skipping it, then Doc Louiss first attack will come out one frame sooner than if you had skipped the cutscene earlier. Aside from that quirk, the rest of the fight remains the same.
Star by waiting until the clock is about to turn to 2:55, then throw a gut punch to get a star and immediately buffer the opposite gut punch into a dodge into another gut punch. This will perfectly buffer a frame perfect move cancel to skip one of Docs longer attack animations that we dont want.
From there, hell throw out the Quick feet, Mac hook, which is somewhat tight to counter. I use his second footstep sound to know when to press punch. Hell slowly try to get back to the center of the ring, so Ill throw a punch to center him faster, which starts the timer for his next move to start sooner than usual. Then, have Mac throw a delayed punch to cancel another slow attack of Docs, which will make Doc throw out his Come on uppercut.
Countering that uppercut will get you your 3rd star and hell try to center himself in the ring again. Buffer a left punch by pressing it as Macs previous punch animation is ending, then buffer 3 alternating punches, which is a new frame perfect buffer, to center Doc ASAP.
Hell throw out an unreactable jab to attempt to collect a star for himself right after, so just buffer a duck and punch him to stun him. You need to wait until the chocolate bar hits the R in ROUND before you throw your star punch. This is so the star will land just as Doc barely goes idle. which will force him to attack immediately as he centers himself.
I do a pseudo buffer here, which is where Ill start the buffer immediately once Docs HP is no longer white. From there, I buffer 2 gut punches, a dodge, and punch in order to try to hit him on the first possible frame. Once this punch lands, the clock completely freezes, so a slightly delayed star punch as Doc pulls out the chocolate bar will let the damage go through first, before he has a chance to eat the chocolate bar and unleash his 2nd form. His HP is so low that this will KO him first, ending the fight!
Ill come back to this game eventually, but I feel this revisit was warranted since my recording setup has gotten so much better and I wanted all the runs for this game to be updated, both in gameplay and video quality. I should be heading back to Wii Punch Out for the time being, so stay tuned for more of that!

Ok THIS one was completely out of nowhere. I did literally 23 minutes of attempts since I got the 42.83 world record last night, and got 3 attempts in a row that didnt get the TKO recovery (one of which was on TAS pace). Then this fight was the fourth attempt that got to the TKO recovery... and it succeeded. I ended up improving the time to where I am now a single frame from the TAS time of 42.72.
Previously, I reported that I got 15 recoveries out of 63 total attempts, which was slightly below the expected 25% by being ~23.81%. However, with the addition of 4 attempts with 1 success (16 of 67), my odds for recoveries since Ive come back to this have risen mildly to ~23.88%.
This is one of two fights in this game that requires a technique called the TKO Recovery which, as the name suggests, is when Mac resists being TKOd and gets back on his feet instead of going down for the expected TKO. This happens completely randomly, estimated to be anywhere from 15-25% on average. This makes optimizing this fight far more difficult than it would otherwise be, considering 75%+ of your attempts wont make it past this point. Champions mode is used for this fight to skip his rage uppercuts whenever he gets up from a knockdown. It also has Soda throw a jab whenever you get up from a knockdown, which can be countered for a star!
Lets get into the fight. The first thing thats done is a delayed gut punch off of Sodas first jab, which if done correctly, yields a star. If you follow that up with a delayed jab, then throw a star as hes reeling, Soda will be instantly knocked down!
Phase 2 involves taking a knockdown to skip Sodas rage uppercuts, then getting up and countering Sodas jab for a star. Off of this counter, I buffer 2 ducks into alternating punches to hit Soda on the first possible frame as he finishes drinking his soda and walks back in, which weirdly enough, rewards a star. The instant knockdown done in phase 1 works in subsequent phases... but will require an additional star each time its done (this time requires 2). This particular attack also lets me do a delayed jab to get him into position for the instant knockdown too, since countering his bottle would just make Soda mad and rush in for a sequence of rage uppercuts.
Phase 3 has Mac take his 2nd knockdown, to which Mac gets up and counters Sodas scripted jab. Now, this delayed star punch needs to be timed in a very specific way such that Sodas next attacks gets skipped. If you throw the star punch too early, then Soda will do slow hooks after Macs next knockdown, which instantly ends the attempt. The visual cue that youve thrown it correctly is if Soda just barely gets completely centered as the star punch lands.
After the star punch, Soda reels to the back of the ring and runs back to Mac to throw more rage uppercuts, which Mac takes. This is where luck comes into play, because thats Macs 3rd knockdown, meaning we need the lucky TKO recovery. Thankfully in this run I get it!
Once Mac is back up on his feet, counter Sodas scripted jab, and counter Sodas bottle. This will make Soda mad and hell approach you to do rage uppercuts, however a delayed star punch will hit him if you time it just right, and a double star punch here is just enough to take him out for good.
This will likely be a short lived record, since there are quite a few active Wii Punch Out runners. I might try to throw a few more attempts at this than I thought I would, since Ive never had this level of consistency on this fight before lol. Either way, Im pretty happy with this fight, even if I never end up improving it at this point.

So this is exciting, because the longstanding 905 strategy on Mad Clown that was first published in the Super Punch Out TAS back in 5/29/2007 has been improved! To see that strategy, you can check out my recent upload of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs6AEtl-HMs
Its been nearly 15 years since Mad Clown has had a legitimate strategy improvement, which is amazing. Strategies in this game dont really get obsoleted that often, with the next most recent improvements being from McHazard all the way back in 2014 on Muscle, Heike, Narcis, and Rick, so this is quite the treat.
Lixunis has been finding strategies for the PAL version of Super Punch Out recently, which actually has several wildly different strategies from the NTSC version, but ended up checking the NTSC version for things recently for full game speedrun stuff. This strategy involved 6 frame perfect things you needed to time, as well as an extra unstunned jab, which increases the luck needed greatly. These difficulty increases mean that this new Mad Clown is now the hardest fight to match the TAS on that isnt Narcis Prince. It was a mad dash to match the new TAS time, but fellow Super Punch Out runner Murakuma was able to seal the deal the next afternoon! Later on that day, McHazard showed up and found a large strategy adjustment that ends up getting you the same exact time with the exact same luck, but removes the delayed rapid jab in Lixuniss strategy, making it fully buffered, which makes it far less annoying for runners to hit. I decided to shift gears and go for this new phase 1.
This fight starts with you pressing nothing for the first frame, and then pressing Up and Y to throw a left jab on the next frame. Follow up from that left jab with two more buffered left jabs, with Mad Clown hopefully standing still without random retaliations and not randomly blocking for the first 2 of these 3 jabs. From there, Clown will throw a hook on your right side, and youll need to do a delayed right jab to counter it.
Once the hook is countered, youll have to do land a left jab on the first frame AFTER Clowns stun ends, which is a very awkward timing. I opted to do a pseudo buffer by timing a quick duck shortly after I visually see Clowns sprite change into his stunned sprite, then buffer 2 left jabs out of it and also and hope they both land without him randomly blocking, or doing random retaliations during them.
Once they land, Clown will attempt to throw another hook, to which you will have to buffer rapid jabs by pressing A, letting go when you see your character start his super, then repressing it. That rapid jab will hit him out of that animation, and make him instantly go dizzy. Since rapid jabs made him dizzy, the buffer strategy needs to be different than the one in the 905 run. Hold left, and dont let go until your character centers himself, then press Left then Up in rapid succession, along with A to throw an uppercut to knock Clown down.
Clown opens phase 2 by either doing a taunt where hes pointing to his stomach, which means hell retaliate when you attempt to throw a punch, or hell randomly dodge a punch being thrown at him. Start by pressing nothing on the first frame the fight starts back up, then press Up + A to throw an uppercut. Once that lands, Clown will do a jab, that you just need to counter with a right jab, and then buffer another uppercut for knockdown 2.
If you got this far, then congratulations, because youve effectively finished the fight! For phase 3, Mad Clown will always open with Show Time, which involves him throwing really fast jabs that people usually block. But since Clown always opens with jabs on your right, you can easily counter them by buffering a right jab as soon as the phase begins! Because of how fast phase 2 was, hell come back with so little health that hell instantly go right back down when the jab lands.

You ever go through your old files from ~5 years ago to delete stuff, and accidentally find a world record in there that you forgot to upload? Turns out thats exactly what this is LOL
My only guess was that I intended to beat this score before uploading it, but never got around to it and just completely forgot about uploading what I had. I am kind of shocked that despite the nearly 5 years of inactivity, that this run still appears to be the highest score out there. Also, from what it looks like, this file was recorded on June 26th, 2016.
Ok so I guess I should go over how high score works in this game real quick. The way bonus points revolving around charge shots fired at enemy groups is exactly the same as it is in Star Fox 64, where you want to intentionally miss enemy groups in order to maximize the HIT+ bonus.
This game has a couple of extra things to consider though, since when enemy ships are killed, they start tumbling to the ground. If you can shoot the debris down before it explodes, you get even *more* bonus points. You can also score points off of using the terrain to defeat enemies, which is why youll see me shoot pillars down near the end of the stage to crush other nearby enemies. Additionally, your teammates health factors into your final score a great deal (each teammates full health bar is worth 10 points, whereas a teammate with just a sliver of health is worth 1).
As far as the run itself goes, it seems pretty decent. I wish I could go into more detail than that, but I cant remember specifics considering how long ago it was since Ive played last. I really like this game, because its scoring mechanics are actually pretty solid, but I wish the game didnt have forced dual screen gameplay, and mandatory controls that you cant remap or use any other controller for.

Phase 1 happens to be completely identical to the NTSC strategy, so we’ll just cover that real quick. Start the fight by not pressing anything for the first frame of the fight, then press Up+Y for the second frame to get a left jab to sneak past his guard. Rick is unique in that he will reel back and retaliate with a jab every time you sneak a punch through his guard, so keep that in mind whenever you fight him!
Dodge his retaliation jab, and Rick will immediately attempt 2 jabs on your right side, followed by a hook on your left side. Immediately upon being centered from your previous dodge, throw a right jab with a slight delay to counter Ricks jab, then proceed to buffer the following sequence: right jab, right body, right jab, right jab, right body, then another right body to interrupt his hook. This deals exactly the amount of damage needed to get you the ideal phase 2 and 3 refills of 25HP and 14HP, which is exactly enough HP for a single uppercut in phase 3 to TKO Rick.
Rick’s ideal health refill will “cascade” down from phase 1, because health refills on this game are partially determined by how much health the opponent had before the final punch knocks him down. You can get lower phase 1 times if you do faster punches, but Rick’s health refill will be ruined in phase 3 if you do.
Upon throwing that final right body, Rick will go dizzy, and buffering 2 left gut punches into a low super will net you the first knockdown of the fight. This dizzy animation is also considerably shorter than the NTSC-U versions since Rick goes dizzy immediately when the punch hits in the PAL and NTSC-J versions, while in the NTSC-U version, he recoils and attempts to do a retaliation punch *BEFORE* the dizzy animation actually starts. This saves quite a bit of time over the US version as youd expect.
For phase 2, there’s a huge deviation because of the speeds of punches in the PAL version compared to the NTSC versions. To start phase 2, you will need to do a guard manipulated uppercut, which means pressing nothing at all for the first frame, then Up+A for the second frame.
This allows Rick to take an uppercut, although he can dodge it 5/8s of the time, as well as doing a sidestep jump, which is 1/8 likely each time he shuffles his feet. Assuming he does neither of these, hell be hit with the uppercut, and attempt to counter-jab you for it, to which you just dodge to the right.
On the NTSC versions, you would need to then dodge to the left to avoid his hook after dodging the retaliation jab, then cancel your dodge by pressing the A button at the perfect time to cut the dodge tightly and do a low super for the 2nd knockdown of the fight. However, in the PAL version, you have *exactly* enough time to center yourself and just immediately throw a low super directly into his hook, and it’ll barely land. Thankfully this maneuver is also super easy to do, as you just need to buffer a quick dodge and immediately cancel it with the A button to throw the low super.
The first time I ever saw this strategy anywhere was from a channel named “Jelly Man” many years ago. I couldn’t find the video up anymore, but I did come across the channel again recently. Phase 3 is simply the exact same as the start of phase 2 thankfully, which just involves another guard manipulated uppercut, which means pressing nothing at all for the first frame, then Up+A for the second frame. The same odds apply, where you need to win a 5/8s luck roll, and not get the 1/8 Rick sidestep. Once this uppercut lands, Rick will go down for the TKO in under 10 seconds!
Here is the luck breakdown for this strategy to succeed:
Phase 2:
-Landing an unstunned uppercut (5/8)
-Rick stands still (7/8)
-Total Phase 2 odds: (5/8)*(7/8) = 35 / 64 = ~1 / 1.82857 (or ~54.69%)
Phase 3:
-Landing an unstunned uppercut (5/8)
-Rick stands still (7/8)
-Total Phase 3 odds: (5/8)*(7/8) = 35 / 64 = ~1 / 1.82857 (or ~54.69%)
Total fight odds: (35/64)*(35/64) = 1,225 / 4,096 = ~1 / 3.3436 (or ~29.9%)
Pretty decent odds all things considered! It helps a lot that phase 1 has zero luck at all, and phases 2 and 3 are reasonably likely.

This was played on an original Splatterhouse arcade PCB on the H.A.S. supergun. My Splatterhouse PCB also now has the EVERTEN stereo expansion board, so the audio is more clear now with separate stereo channels! This run was done on the hardest difficulty, which starts you at 2HP instead of the default 4HP.
This was also recorded through the Datapath E1 capture card via RGB and upscaled to 4k, so this quality is about as crisp as you can possibly get on real hardware. For comparison, you can check out my first 13:37 run from a while back which was recorded via S-Video to see how much better the recording quality has gotten: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvgl8DadM6M
It is also worth noting that the game is running at a slightly higher framerate than the home release ports out there (JP Wii VC at 59.94 fps, and the Namco Museum version runs at ~60 fps). This board appears to run at about 60.60 frames a second, so this benefits from small time gains compared to those versions.
It’s also worth noting that YouTube will kind of “squish” the frame rate of the video in order for it to comply to the standard 60fps that their platform handles, which results in some staggered scrolling and uneven flickering that can be very slightly unpleasant to some people.
I dont normally do this, but since this arcade board is significantly outside that spec (60.6 FPS), I’m also including some lossless video files that do not have this issue. The smallest one will just be the actual resolution of the game (288x224), as well as an integer scale for 4x of that size. These files are pretty large since they’re lossless, like on the order of 3-6 GB depending on the one you pick, so just be aware of that! The 4x scale is the most comfortable size to watch, but it can be taxing to view on some computers, so be aware of that too.

So Stormcrow56k picked this game up for speedrunning recently, and found a couple of new strategies in a few spots. The main optimization he found was for the stage 2 boss, where he found an approach to kill the chair with one punch and one slidekick, however its extremely difficult and inconsistent, so he also found a backup strategy that minimizes time loss if you dont get it, which helps justify going for it.
Beyond the chair kill, theres a really hard strategy that requires good luck on knives such that they cross in the center of the room, as well as a really difficult jump-punch strategy to take out the 2 airborne knives, which requires pressing jump and punch on the same frame to get Rick to carry his punch state into the air and punch twice in the air. Normally when you do a jump, your first attack will always be a jump kick, and any subsequent attack will be a jump punch (unless you hold down for more jump kicks).
The other big find that Stormcrow found was for the Jennifer boss fight in stage 5. Effectively, you can exchange one of the punches early in the the fight with a very late slide kick for the last attack, which saves you one attack and nets you a tiny bit of time.
This run was pretty much what I was looking for. I got the best version of the new stage 2 boss kill, then nailed stages 5, 6, and 7. I had a few small mistakes, like in stage 3, I hit attack too early and did a ducking kick instead of a shotgun blast. In stage 4 I somehow managed to only get 1 hit on the boss when it initially stops (usually I get 2), then ended up having to kill the boss as it touched the floor on the right side, whereas the best kill gets it when its at the top of the screen on the right. The final mistake in the run was me missing a slide kick near the end of the chair room, which loses about a quarter of a second.
I lost about half a second on the final boss due to luck, with the hands spawning on the same side that the head spawned both times. The stand out highlight of this run is definitely the stage 6 boss kill. For the rest of my splits, I maintained roughly the same pace on average, but I got a gold split on 6 due to how aggressive I was able to play it. This run was also almost damageless! The exact time of this run is a 13:28.974, which beats the old run by 3.103 seconds (old record was a 13:32.077). With this run, I’m done with this version of the game unless new strategies end up being found. This run is slightly over 2 seconds from my sum of best, which is wild considering how many luck elements the game has. I’ll probably start messing with getting captures for my SNES to be as crisp as they can be, then start messing with redoing the Super Punch Out individual fights with high quality uploads.

This was played on an original Splatterhouse arcade PCB on the H.A.S. supergun. This run was done on the hardest difficulty, which starts you at 2HP instead of the default 4HP. This was recorded through an S-Video connection because my setup cannot support RGB signals at the moment.
It is also worth noting that since I am running this game on an original arcade board now, that the game is running at a slightly higher framerate than the previous version that I ran (JP Wii VC at 59.94 fps). This board appears to run at about 60.60 frames a second, so this run benefits from small time gains gradually throughout the run vs my old run on Wii JP VC.
The run itself had a few mistakes here and there, but it also had some incredible parts. Stage 2 has a slide hit on the chair now, stage 4 had a perfect fight outside of going for super unpredictable glitched hits, stage 5 had good boss luck, and the 7th stage boss fight was perfect execution and luck!
Definitely want to improve this time further, but Im going to have to start going for some really difficult strategies at this point to save time now.")

EDIT: Been real busy with the tail end of GDQx and AGDQ submissions & registration to where I havent gotten a decent chance to update the description for this video to reflect recent times. There are way too many comments to reply to all of them, so Ill add an FAQ here addressing some of the more common comments Ive seen.
Q1: This run is invalid because you used glitches, why do you think this run is valid?
A1: This run is valid because glitches are universally allowed for speedruns as long as you arent using outside sources to alter the game code. There exists a glitchless category for this game which bans the use of prop flying, clips, and various abuses of the game geometry. I might run that category eventually since it looks fun too!
Q2: You didnt do all the tasks on the list, which should mean this isnt an any% run, right?
A2: Any% has always meant that you complete any amount of the game necessary to reach the end as fast as possible. The category that corresponds to completing all the objectives in the game is the 100% category, although this game also has an All Main Tasks category now!
Q3: Did you know about *insert some new trick/clip/ect or trick from another run or the DeSinc video*?
A3: Yes, I do. Most of these mentioned tricks were found very shortly after I posted this run 2 days after the game came out. I found prop flying literally on my casual playthrough on release day and was the first to find a skip for areas 1 and 2 (this video uses prop flying to skip areas 1, 2, and 3, which afaik was first found by a runner named Emily). This also leads nicely into the next question...
Q4: Hey your time got beaten, its now a 3:XX/2:XX, are you aware?
A4: Yep, it happened shortly after I posted my run in fact! I just havent gotten a good chance to update the description accordingly for this video until now, since all my recent GDQ related activity has finally calmed down. Q5: Im pretty sure the time you listed is wrong? It should be 8:45/10:42/ect
A5: Timing for this game starts the moment you first press Y to honk, and ends the frame the bell hits the ground. By that timing scheme, this ends up being a very low 8:27.
Q6: Why didnt you put the rake in the lake?

Despite technically being a world record, the optimization of this route is in constant flux due to how this game literally just came out, so expect this to be obsoleted very, very soon with a route change or persistence with attempts from me or other runners.
That being said, this game is hilarious and I love it. Expect to see more of these in the coming weeks. Hopefully someone will be able to find a way to break into that gate that leads to the end, but a really powerful invisible wall is making it difficult to find a clip. Anyways, enjoy!")
