You ever go through your old files from ~5 years ago to delete stuff, and accidentally find a world record in there that you forgot to upload? Turns out that's exactly what this is LOL
My only guess was that I intended to beat this score before uploading it, but never got around to it and just completely forgot about uploading what I had. I am kind of shocked that despite the nearly 5 years of inactivity, that this run still appears to be the highest score out there. Also, from what it looks like, this file was recorded on June 26th, 2016.
Ok so I guess I should go over how high score works in this game real quick. The way bonus points revolving around charge shots fired at enemy groups is exactly the same as it is in Star Fox 64, where you want to intentionally miss enemy groups in order to maximize the "HIT+" bonus.
This game has a couple of extra things to consider though, since when enemy ships are killed, they start tumbling to the ground. If you can shoot the debris down before it explodes, you get even *more* bonus points. You can also score points off of using the terrain to defeat enemies, which is why you'll see me shoot pillars down near the end of the stage to crush other nearby enemies. Additionally, your teammates health factors into your final score a great deal (each teammate's full health bar is worth 10 points, whereas a teammate with just a sliver of health is worth 1).
As far as the run itself goes, it seems pretty decent. I wish I could go into more detail than that, but I can't remember specifics considering how long ago it was since I've played last. I really like this game, because its scoring mechanics are actually pretty solid, but I wish the game didn't have forced dual screen gameplay, and mandatory controls that you can't remap or use any other controller for.

This run was done on an original Spanish Super Nintendo cartridge of Super Punch-Out, as well as an original PAL Super Nintendo 1chip console that was recapped and modded with the Borti RGB amp.

Phase 1 happens to be completely identical to the NTSC strategy, so we’ll just cover that real quick. Start the fight by not pressing anything for the first frame of the fight, then press Up+Y for the second frame to get a left jab to sneak past his guard. Rick is unique in that he will reel back and retaliate with a jab every time you sneak a punch through his guard, so keep that in mind whenever you fight him!
Dodge his retaliation jab, and Rick will immediately attempt 2 jabs on your right side, followed by a hook on your left side. Immediately upon being centered from your previous dodge, throw a right jab with a slight delay to counter Ricks jab, then proceed to buffer the following sequence: right jab, right body, right jab, right jab, right body, then another right body to interrupt his hook. This deals exactly the amount of damage needed to get you the ideal phase 2 and 3 refills of 25HP and 14HP, which is exactly enough HP for a single uppercut in phase 3 to TKO Rick.
Rick’s ideal health refill will “cascade” down from phase 1, because health refills on this game are partially determined by how much health the opponent had before the final punch knocks him down. You can get lower phase 1 times if you do faster punches, but Rick’s health refill will be ruined in phase 3 if you do.
Upon throwing that final right body, Rick will go dizzy, and buffering 2 left gut punches into a low super will net you the first knockdown of the fight. This dizzy animation is also considerably shorter than the NTSC-U versions since Rick goes dizzy immediately when the punch hits in the PAL and NTSC-J versions, while in the NTSC-U version, he recoils and attempts to do a retaliation punch *BEFORE* the dizzy animation actually starts. This saves quite a bit of time over the US version as youd expect.
For phase 2, there’s a huge deviation because of the speeds of punches in the PAL version compared to the NTSC versions. To start phase 2, you will need to do a guard manipulated uppercut, which means pressing nothing at all for the first frame, then Up+A for the second frame.
This allows Rick to take an uppercut, although he can dodge it 5/8s of the time, as well as doing a sidestep jump, which is 1/8 likely each time he shuffles his feet. Assuming he does neither of these, hell be hit with the uppercut, and attempt to counter-jab you for it, to which you just dodge to the right.
On the NTSC versions, you would need to then dodge to the left to avoid his hook after dodging the retaliation jab, then cancel your dodge by pressing the A button at the perfect time to cut the dodge tightly and do a low super for the 2nd knockdown of the fight. However, in the PAL version, you have *exactly* enough time to center yourself and just immediately throw a low super directly into his hook, and it’ll barely land. Thankfully this maneuver is also super easy to do, as you just need to buffer a quick dodge and immediately cancel it with the A button to throw the low super.
The first time I ever saw this strategy anywhere was from a channel named “Jelly Man” many years ago. I couldn’t find the video up anymore, but I did come across the channel again recently. Phase 3 is simply the exact same as the start of phase 2 thankfully, which just involves another guard manipulated uppercut, which means pressing nothing at all for the first frame, then Up+A for the second frame. The same odds apply, where you need to win a 5/8s luck roll, and not get the 1/8 Rick sidestep. Once this uppercut lands, Rick will go down for the TKO in under 10 seconds!
Here is the luck breakdown for this strategy to succeed:
Phase 2:
-Landing an unstunned uppercut (5/8)
-Rick stands still (7/8)
-Total Phase 2 odds: (5/8)*(7/8) = 35 / 64 = ~1 / 1.82857 (or ~54.69%)
Phase 3:
-Landing an unstunned uppercut (5/8)
-Rick stands still (7/8)
-Total Phase 3 odds: (5/8)*(7/8) = 35 / 64 = ~1 / 1.82857 (or ~54.69%)
Total fight odds: (35/64)*(35/64) = 1,225 / 4,096 = ~1 / 3.3436 (or ~29.9%)
Pretty decent odds all things considered! It helps a lot that phase 1 has zero luck at all, and phases 2 and 3 are reasonably likely.

This was played on an original Splatterhouse arcade PCB on the H.A.S. supergun. My Splatterhouse PCB also now has the EVERTEN stereo expansion board, so the audio is more clear now with separate stereo channels! This run was done on the hardest difficulty, which starts you at 2HP instead of the default 4HP.
This was also recorded through the Datapath E1 capture card via RGB and upscaled to 4k, so this quality is about as crisp as you can possibly get on real hardware. For comparison, you can check out my first 13:37 run from a while back which was recorded via S-Video to see how much better the recording quality has gotten: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvgl8DadM6M
It is also worth noting that the game is running at a slightly higher framerate than the home release ports out there (JP Wii VC at 59.94 fps, and the Namco Museum version runs at ~60 fps). This board appears to run at about 60.60 frames a second, so this benefits from small time gains compared to those versions.
It’s also worth noting that YouTube will kind of “squish” the frame rate of the video in order for it to comply to the standard 60fps that their platform handles, which results in some staggered scrolling and uneven flickering that can be very slightly unpleasant to some people.
I dont normally do this, but since this arcade board is significantly outside that spec (60.6 FPS), I’m also including some lossless video files that do not have this issue. The smallest one will just be the actual resolution of the game (288x224), as well as an integer scale for 4x of that size. These files are pretty large since they’re lossless, like on the order of 3-6 GB depending on the one you pick, so just be aware of that! The 4x scale is the most comfortable size to watch, but it can be taxing to view on some computers, so be aware of that too.

So Stormcrow56k picked this game up for speedrunning recently, and found a couple of new strategies in a few spots. The main optimization he found was for the stage 2 boss, where he found an approach to kill the chair with one punch and one slidekick, however its extremely difficult and inconsistent, so he also found a backup strategy that minimizes time loss if you dont get it, which helps justify going for it.
Beyond the chair kill, theres a really hard strategy that requires good luck on knives such that they cross in the center of the room, as well as a really difficult jump-punch strategy to take out the 2 airborne knives, which requires pressing jump and punch on the same frame to get Rick to carry his punch state into the air and punch twice in the air. Normally when you do a jump, your first attack will always be a jump kick, and any subsequent attack will be a jump punch (unless you hold down for more jump kicks).
The other big find that Stormcrow found was for the Jennifer boss fight in stage 5. Effectively, you can exchange one of the punches early in the the fight with a very late slide kick for the last attack, which saves you one attack and nets you a tiny bit of time.
This run was pretty much what I was looking for. I got the best version of the new stage 2 boss kill, then nailed stages 5, 6, and 7. I had a few small mistakes, like in stage 3, I hit attack too early and did a ducking kick instead of a shotgun blast. In stage 4 I somehow managed to only get 1 hit on the boss when it initially stops (usually I get 2), then ended up having to kill the boss as it touched the floor on the right side, whereas the best kill gets it when its at the top of the screen on the right. The final mistake in the run was me missing a slide kick near the end of the chair room, which loses about a quarter of a second.
I lost about half a second on the final boss due to luck, with the hands spawning on the same side that the head spawned both times. The stand out highlight of this run is definitely the stage 6 boss kill. For the rest of my splits, I maintained roughly the same pace on average, but I got a gold split on 6 due to how aggressive I was able to play it. This run was also almost damageless! The exact time of this run is a 13:28.974, which beats the old run by 3.103 seconds (old record was a 13:32.077). With this run, I’m done with this version of the game unless new strategies end up being found. This run is slightly over 2 seconds from my sum of best, which is wild considering how many luck elements the game has. I’ll probably start messing with getting captures for my SNES to be as crisp as they can be, then start messing with redoing the Super Punch Out individual fights with high quality uploads.

It is also worth noting that since I am running this game on an original arcade board now, that the game is running at a slightly higher framerate than the previous version that I ran (JP Wii VC at 59.94 fps). This board appears to run at about 60.60 frames a second, so this run benefits from small time gains gradually throughout the run vs my old run on Wii JP VC.
The run itself had a few mistakes here and there, but it also had some incredible parts. Stage 2 has a slide hit on the chair now, stage 4 had a perfect fight outside of going for super unpredictable glitched hits, stage 5 had good boss luck, and the 7th stage boss fight was perfect execution and luck!
Definitely want to improve this time further, but Im going to have to start going for some really difficult strategies at this point to save time now.")

EDIT: Been real busy with the tail end of GDQx and AGDQ submissions & registration to where I havent gotten a decent chance to update the description for this video to reflect recent times. There are way too many comments to reply to all of them, so Ill add an FAQ here addressing some of the more common comments Ive seen.
Q1: This run is invalid because you used glitches, why do you think this run is valid?
A1: This run is valid because glitches are universally allowed for speedruns as long as you arent using outside sources to alter the game code. There exists a glitchless category for this game which bans the use of prop flying, clips, and various abuses of the game geometry. I might run that category eventually since it looks fun too!
Q2: You didnt do all the tasks on the list, which should mean this isnt an any% run, right?
A2: Any% has always meant that you complete any amount of the game necessary to reach the end as fast as possible. The category that corresponds to completing all the objectives in the game is the 100% category, although this game also has an All Main Tasks category now!
Q3: Did you know about *insert some new trick/clip/ect or trick from another run or the DeSinc video*?
A3: Yes, I do. Most of these mentioned tricks were found very shortly after I posted this run 2 days after the game came out. I found prop flying literally on my casual playthrough on release day and was the first to find a skip for areas 1 and 2 (this video uses prop flying to skip areas 1, 2, and 3, which afaik was first found by a runner named Emily). This also leads nicely into the next question...
Q4: Hey your time got beaten, its now a 3:XX/2:XX, are you aware?
A4: Yep, it happened shortly after I posted my run in fact! I just havent gotten a good chance to update the description accordingly for this video until now, since all my recent GDQ related activity has finally calmed down. A5: Timing for this game starts the moment you first press Y to honk, and ends the frame the bell hits the ground. By that timing scheme, this ends up being a very low 8:27.

Despite technically being a world record, the optimization of this route is in constant flux due to how this game literally just came out, so expect this to be obsoleted very, very soon with a route change or persistence with attempts from me or other runners.
That being said, this game is hilarious and I love it. Expect to see more of these in the coming weeks. Hopefully someone will be able to find a way to break into that gate that leads to the end, but a really powerful invisible wall is making it difficult to find a clip. Anyways, enjoy!")

This might be my best speedrunning achievement to pull off at a live GDQ. This run has zero losses or restarts from start to finish, including the bonus Donkey Kong fight at the end. I not only defeated everyone first try, but I beat every opponent in ROUND 1 under marathon pressure!
In this run, I mentioned that this was a new PB (personal best) time for me, but this is a non competitive category since I picked it up primarily for my live run at SGDQ, so by a technicality it is also a world record. I just generally dont like advertising world records as such if categories have zero competition, but because Ive gotten so many questions about it, I figured I should at least acknowledge it in my description.
This was timed with real time (RTA) during SGDQ, but since I never lost or restarted a fight, this can also technically be timed with the in-game time sum of all the fights in the game. This alternate timing method ends up being a 35:45.45 for in-game timing!
I was thinking of adding fight-by-fight comments, but I figured a better method would be to just add a commentated version later on down the road. I would do it sooner, but my voice is still kind of shot from SGDQ, haha.

This was played on an original Splatterhouse arcade PCB on the H.A.S. supergun. This run was also done on default difficulty settings shown at the end of the video, and was recorded through an S-Video connection because my setup cannot support RGB signals at the moment. Its worth noting that this run follows the Twin Galaxies & Aurcade ruleset for score in this game, which bans the use of the double KO tactic on the final boss, which is otherwise the most lucrative option to cash out your extra lives. If this were allowed, then you would have to set up guaranteed double KOs with the blue orb timer, which is something on the order of 14+ minutes per double KO. You could also die to rocks at the end, but if youre on a good pace, the guaranteed route is the best option for consistency. Without the restrictions in this category, scores in the 1.2 - 1.3 million point range are possible.
I also need to make a note that showing your physical DIP switch settings for this game is worthless. Switch 1 enables the settings menu, while switches 2-8 do absolutely nothing, so the only thing that showing the physical dip switches does is tell you whether or not the game is in test mode... which should be already obvious if thats the case or not by looking at the screen. Once the run was over, I flipped DIP switch #1 to show off the actual settings the board was set to during that run.
Because I am doing these attempts on a SuperGun, whenever I reset the board, I am pressing the Test button on the SuperGun. This actually resets the board without me having to power off the board and cause potential damage to it over time.
This recording is from my Twitch stream, which is where this run was performed live for an audience of about 50 or so people who decided to watch attempts that night. I did do 2 local recordings of this run, but both of them got messed up in one way or another (one had 90+ inserted frames in a huge cluster in the middle, and the other was recorded with an awful codec). Ok, now that we got all the fine details out of the way, lets talk about the run itself. I made a splitsheet out of a Google Doc to compare my live run directly to the previous run that I uploaded to youtube. This lets you know my score pace on a level-by-level basis so its really easy to follow how well Im doing at any given moment.
I made some silly mistakes early on that cost me a fair bit of health, but thankfully none of it mattered, because the first time I got to stage 6, I never got hit all the way until the blue orb appeared to kill me.
Something I need to elaborate on; the blue orb is a counter-measure so that players do not stay in one spot for an infinite amount of time. This is so theres something to kick idle players off of the game so any new players who walk up to the cabinet dont get any free games, as well as just make sure that players cant stall in one spot to prevent others from playing. This orb is great for score, since it puts a finite limit on how long you can point press any given spot.
My stage 6 loops were completely all over the place. Some loops were completely awful, where I would die way too early. Most of the other loops were insane, and handily made up for any of my weaker stage 6 loops.
With the completion of this run, this marks a new world record for this category, besting Anthony Paparos previous record of 716,000 ponts! I gotta give huge shoutouts to both Anthony Paparo and Caitlin Oliver for driving up this score over the years! Their efforts to optimize this score ultimately inspired me to attempt this once I finally got access to arcade hardware.")
