Today’s punch was recorded in a book from 1882 called Social Life in the Reign of Queen Anne, but the recipe can be traced back to 1707. It uses only one type of alcohol—cognac—which is widely available and thus makes this an easy punch to recreate. Serve this to your guests at your next gathering and bask in their admiration.
Major Bird’s Brandy Punch (1707)
1qt/945ml cognac
8oz/235ml granulated sugar
8oz/235ml strained lemon juice
6c/1.4L cold water
Of course, these measurements can be scaled for a smaller (or larger) batch.
