I was talking to 2 charming and interesting boys when the fight began so I was not really concentrating on what was happening. If I had been more focused on the capybaras I would have stepped in to interact with Syrup, and by changing his mood I am able to prevent him from fighting. As happened the previous time when I saw Syrup and Prune fight, a much worse fight took place the following morning when the Biopark was closed and there were no humans around to interrupt the fight. Unlike previous occasions, Syrup suffered quite a few wounds, but as before Prune seemed to come off worse. For a long time after this fight Prune and Syrup remained alone, apart from the herd. I have the impression Syrup has been trying to avoid fighting. On 2 occasions when he started to look aggressive, he has turned away and distracted himself by either jumping in the pond, or by going to eat some hay. The third brother, Whip, avoids fighting but he looked very angrily at Syrup after the first fight when I believe Syrup did attack him. Whip usually moves away if Syrup comes close, but on a few occasions he has wanted to test his place in the hierarchy (he used to be above Syrup and the highest-ranking of Maple's 5 offspring) and has approached, or reacted, to Syrup a little aggressively, but he understands the wisdom of avoiding a fight, so he always turns away. Prune often seems more aggressive and more intense during his fights with Syrup than Syrup does. It may be that Syrup is reacting to some behaviour by Prune which humans are not party to. This could be a vocalisation at ultrasonic levels or some body language or some other means of communication, perhaps olfactory. Donut has wisely given up trying to intervene. Donut frequently intimidates Syrup, perhaps to reinforce his position as number one in the hierarchy, and Syrup always gives way. I don't see Donut interact with Prune as much, although occasionally I see them together rubbing noses or some other interaction in the pond. Donut seems intent on spreading his genes and I wonder if this is because the fights have made him worried that his days as number one in the hierarchy may be numbered. Or perhaps it is due to his age, at 10, maybe he feels time is running out. Or maybe he has just found something much more enjoyable than fighting, and which helps to reduce the stress he is under as leader of the herd. I thought the hair on his coat was looking a little thin. This could be due to diet as I am concerned at all the cost savings that are being inflicted on the capybara's diet. Or it could be the stress of leading a herd where there is so much aggression when Donut would like it to be a relaxed and peaceful herd. Sister Milk is the capybara most interested in stepping forward to see the fighting.
