Protopterus aethiopicus, also known as the Marbled Lungfish, is a fascinating freshwater species from Central and East Africa, including the Nile and Congo River systems, lakes, swamps and floodplains.
This prehistoric-looking fish can grow impressively large โ commonly around 1.3 m, with records up to 2 m in length. Its long, eel-like body, marbled pattern and thin, thread-like fins make it truly unique.
Its most remarkable feature: it can breathe air with lungs and survive in low-oxygen waters. During dry periods, lungfish can even burrow into mud and enter a resting state until water returns.
