Craspedacusta sowerbii, a tiny freshwater jellyfish originally from East Asia that is now widespread across Europe โ including Germany.
I actually kept some of these fascinating animals in an aquarium many years ago. They survived for several weeks, but only as long as I regularly replaced part of the aquarium water with fresh water from the exact lake where I had collected them.
Whenever I tried doing water changes with normal fresh aquarium water or RO water, the jellyfish died within just a few days.
That experience always made me wonder how dependent these delicate animals really are on the specific water chemistry, microorganisms and overall ecosystem of their habitat. In my case, simply recreating the temperature and basic water parameters was clearly not enough. Something in that natural lake water seemed to make a crucial difference.
It was one of the most unusual animals I have ever kept โ and also a reminder of just how comwplex a seemingly simple freshwater ecosystem can be.
