Magnigryllacris guomashan, a large and rather extraordinary raspy cricket from Yunnan, China. In China, it is also kept by specialised insect enthusiasts.
Its strangest talent is silk production. Unlike spiders, the silk comes from glands associated with its mouthparts. The cricket uses these threads to stitch leaves together, creating a protected daytime shelter โ basically a tiny insect tailor. ๐ฟ
It is mainly nocturnal and omnivorous, feeding on small insects as well as fruit and other plant material. In captivity it appreciates warm, humid conditions, plenty of ventilation, branches and large leaves for building shelters.
Despite its almost comical appearance, it has powerful jaws and can be territorial, so individual housing is usually the safer option.
