World leaders are set to flock to Laos later this week to attend a series of meetings with the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
It will be a remarkable opportunity for South Korea too, as this year marks the 35th anniversary of the South Korea-ASEAN dialogue partnership.
President Yoon Suk-yeol also began his trip to Southeast Asia on Sunday to bolster ties with member states.

So, what can we expect out of this year’s ASEAN summit? What could be South Korea’s biggest takeaway?
For this, we connect to South Korea’s former ambassador to ASEAN, Suh Jeong-in via Zoom.

1. As a diplomat who has represented South Korea, how do you assess the relationship that South Korea and the ASEAN have established so far?

2. South Korea and the ASEAN member states have been cooperating in a variety of fields including foreign relations, security, economy, and culture.
Let's first touch upon the economic side of things, how's the situation in terms of trade?

3. The U.S., China and Japan have increasingly been working to deepen their partnerships with the ASEAN market.
What kind of economic potential do ASEAN countries have?

4.In today’s increasingly polarized world, how important is cooperation between South Korea and ASEAN for the security of the Korean Peninsula and the region?

5. ASEAN has maintained "strategic ambiguity" amid a tug of war between world powers.
Are there any signs of changes in this policy?

6. On the other hand, how does ASEAN percieve South Korea?

7. Also the popularity of Hallyu, especially K-pop and K-beauty has continued strong growth in the ASEAN region.
