Tuesday was day 20 of Lindsay Clancy's murder trial in Plymouth Superior Court, and after hearing from more than 82 witnesses, the commonwealth called its final rebuttal witness to the stand.
Dr. Gregory Saathoff focused more on the forensic side of things. He highlighted what he felt are inconsistences in Clancy's story and told the jury about the intentional sequence of decisions she made on Jan. 24, 2023.
Saathoff is a forensic psychiatrist who works with the FBI's behavioral analysis unit.
Like other prosecution witnesses, he said the way Clancy described the voices she heard on Jan. 24 was unusual.
"Just as soon as it had started, it stopped," Saathoff said. "The voice had stopped as soon as she had strangled her last -- Callan, her youngest child."
He testified that the fact that the voice was constant, and stopped after she strangled her youngest child, was unusual.
"Committing the act is not curative of the voice. I've not ever seen that," Saathoff said.
He pointed to inconsistencies in her story from that night and in her behavior in the weeks before.
"To Dr. Spinelli, for example, she said that the voice happened at 5:10 or 5:15 p.m. as soon as Patrick Clancy left," Saathoff said. "The portrayal, her portrayal, misled others in terms of how she was doing."
And he highlighted how her attempted suicide methods and choice of strangulation showed sequential decision making.
In the morning, jurors heard from Dr. Kirk Heilbrun, who said that while Clancy was suffering from a mental disease "she retained an awareness of the illegality of killing others, including killing her children."
