The Monroe County Sheriff's Office released body camera video Thursday of an incident earlier this month that resulted in two deputies fatally shooting a man at a Henrietta hotel, while the man's family has filed a notice of claim indicating he was deaf.
Chief Deputy Michael Fowler previously said deputies responded to the Super 8 on Lehigh Station Road just before 4 p.m. Aug. 9 for a report of a suicidal man. Deputies found the man — identified Thursday as Gregory Kase, 62 — armed with a box cutter. They gave him multiple commands to drop the box cutter, but he was uncooperative, resulting in two deputies firing their weapons and striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The video shows deputies walking through a hotel hallway at 4:08 p.m., with one telling a hotel employee they are looking for Greg Kase. The employee leads them to the room and warns them the man has a knife.
The first deputy kicks down the door while calling "Greg" and pointing a gun. The deputy asks the man where he is and orders him to drop the knife, while identifying himself as "the police." The man then says he can't hear the deputy.
The deputy says "Greg, don't do this" before the man opens a bathroom door, apparently naked. Both deputies order the man to "drop it" as the man starts to walk out of the bathroom. Three gunshots are then fired toward the man, while the image of the man's body is then redacted.
The first deputy then reports shots were fired and asks for fire and EMS to "step it up." The video ends just under 1 minute and 30 seconds after it started.
"Unfortunately, as we saw, this incident has a tragic ending," Fowler said after releasing the video Thursday. "Mr. Kase made a choice. His actions dictated how this incident ended. He had repeated opportunities to put the knife down or stay in the bathroom."
According to the notice of claim filed by Kase's family, Kase was experiencing a mental health crisis and his "profound deafness" made him unable to comply with verbal commands.
"Mr. Kase was totally deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other. He wore a single hearing aid. Even wearing that hearing aid, and even seated beside a person speaking to him, he could hear and understand speech only if he was facing the speaker and able to read the speaker's lips, and he routinely required a raised voice and two or three repetitions. When he could not hear, he habitually raised his hand toward his ear. He startled when touched, or when approached from behind or from a direction he was not facing."
