Progesterone and synthetic progestogens aren't the same, even though many people, including doctors, often use the word progesterone for both. Progesterone is the hormone your body makes itself, or the bioidentical molecule we prescribe, whereas the progestogens in coils, implants, depot and the mini pill are chemically different and actually block the progesterone receptor as well as blocking other hormones working in the body.

So for some women like Anna, even a small amount of synthetic progestogen reaching her body and brain can have really negative effects, especially on mental health.
