This primitive clay pottery project took place over two weeks. The pocket of clay was discovered during a kayaking trip. The following weekend I hiked on foot to the same location where I collected the clay and formed the first clay pot. I returned home with the project to allow it time to dry. Unfortunately, I dried the pot far too quickly and the clay formed several large cracks before the project dried completely. The clay was moistened several times to try and repair existing cracks only to form new and even larger cracks. With some help from my friends on Facebook, it became clear I need to start again and the project was returned to a moist clay ball. The second clay pot was allowed to dry inside a vegetable ziplock bag over five days. No cracks formed. I returned to the same location on the third weekend with the dried clay pot to fire it and complete this video.
The hand drill friction fire kit featured in this video was a gift from Ancient Ways Channel. The components produce a coal almost every time with ease.
