Snow fleas are not fleas but are springtails. These insects contain a protein that acts like anti-freeze allowing the springtail to live in freezing temperatures. They feed on organic debris and are one of the few insects that occur in the adult stage during the winter. Apparently, these critters are extremely numerous and yet I have never noticed them until today. How about you? Have you ever seen these before?
