The Cabinet has set out its budget bill for next year with spending expected to top 800 trillion won for the first time.

A "stepping stone" to deal with a fast-changing international order.
That's how President Lee Jae Myung described his administration's record-high budget for 2027, put forth on Tuesday, worth nearly 821-trillion won, or about 600-billion U.S. dollars, capitalizing on additional tax revenue from the chip sector, driven by a global AI boom.
It's a 12-point-8 percent increase year-on-year.


"We desperately need a productive fiscal strategy that creates a virtuous circle where an increase in financial resources is used to grow the economic pie and advance our industrial capabilities, and then it leads to even larger fiscal capabilities."


Key pillars of next year's spending include the government's "mega projects" on AI and semiconductors, securing future growth engines, and supporting housing and jobs for young people, among others.

Over 162-trillion won, or over 119-billion dollars, will be set aside for the newly created "future response fund" to make investments in key strategic industries.
The administration plans to use the fund to swiftly respond when a deficit occurs.

With the start of the parliamentary regular session, President Lee urged bipartisan cooperation.


"I ask for broad political cooperation so that the budget can create hope for the people."


He also asked the National Assembly to reflect public opinion when reviewing the spending proposal, adding that the government's budget plan cannot always be perfect and is subject to change if needed.


The budget bill will be put to the National Assembly for review, with a tussle expected with the opposition party.
The legal deadline for completing the review is December 2nd.
