네팔 대홍수 사망자 800명 넘겨 신속대응팀 "육로 수색 시도"

It's been six days since the fatal flood swept through the border region of Nepal and China.
Though operations continue, rescue teams are facing a desperate race against time with the threat of additional collapse or flooding.
Ahn Sung-jin has the details.

Search and rescue teams are searching through the layers of mud, looking for any sign of life amid the destruction.
But despite the efforts, the death toll continues to climb six days after the devastating flood hit Nepal and Tibet.
The latest figure released by Nepal's disaster management authorities reported that at least 788 people have died and combined with the number of deaths in Tibet reported by Chinese authorities, the overall death toll is now at least 800.
More than 3-thousand people are still unaccounted for.

"There is no connecting road to our village, there is no electricity, and mobile phones can't be charged. Residents of our village remain missing. Now we are here hoping to find them, dead or alive."

Some of the most urgent rescue operations are taking place inside tunnels at hydro-power projects in the Rasuwa region where hundreds of workers may still be trapped inside.
Specialist teams from Korea, Nepal, China and India are involved in the search.
Rescue teams are drilling an access route through the debris covering the top of a tunnel and have installed pipes to pump in air and insert cameras to search for survivors.
However, conditions onsite make operations extremely difficult.
Heavy rain has raised nearby river levels and the lack of specialized equipment further complicates efforts.
Fears of a secondary disaster also remain with landslides blocking rivers with mud and rocks, potentially creating another dam-like lake that could collapse.

Korea continues to search for the nine nationals reported missing in the floods.
The government had planned to deploy two helicopters yet the Nepal Army did not authorize the flights citing safety concerns and air traffic congestion.
The Korean government is considering using drones though this would also require approval from local authorities.
Search teams plan to travel by road and get as close to the disaster site as possible before conducting a ground search.
Nepali and Chinese authorities noted that they are monitoring the risk of further flooding from natural-dam lakes.

The critical 72-hour 'golden window' for finding survivors has already passed, but for families waiting for news, even recovering the body of a loved one has become a relief amid the disaster.
