Although she isn't well-remembered today, Constance Bennett (October 22, 1904 - July 24, 1965) was, in the early 1930s, the highest-paid actress in Hollywood. She was beautiful and often played sophisticated roles or that of girls who become sophisticated. Of course, there were a lot of heartaches, romance, and even comedic moments in her films, and the pre-code era gave her the opportunity to shine. Some of her pre-code films are hard to find, however, the Warner Archive has released some in DVD-R format. Joel McCrea, Basil Rathbone, Richard Barthelmess, Ben Lyon, Neil Hamilton, Robert Montgomery, and Gilbert Roland (who would later become her third husband) were just a few of her leading men. On the birthday of the late Leonard Nimoy (March 26, 1931 - February 27, 2015) heres another tribute to the iconic character he helped to create. While Spock often battled his emotions (made more difficult by the fact that he was half-human) there were people around him who saw the qualities of compassion, and humanity through his logic and intelligence, and he often demonstrated empathy for others. Leonard Nimoy put it like this - Spock is fun to portray, because, underneath, he really does have emotions. If Spock didnt have any emotions, he wouldnt be interesting. Actually, Spock has a considerable amount of compassion, though he wont allow himself to believe that. There is also what the character of Spock represents, what Nimoy referred to as a very human condition, how and when you should express your emotions, being in touch with them, etc. As Stephen E. Whitfield stated in the book, The Making Of Star Trek, Spock enables the series to make interesting social commentaries on the human race. Spocks alien perspective permits unusually barbed and interesting statements of the fallibility of both human customs and institutions. He allows us to see ourselves as others see us. Another video re-do (the original proved to be very popular). A compilation of clips from four films that featured young actors and actresses portraying friends from an earlier era - and who captured it very well. Stand By Me (1986) starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry OConnell; the 1990 miniseries Stephen Kings It, with Jonathan Brandis, Seth Green, Brandon Crane, Emily Perkins, Adam Farazil, Ben Heller and Marlon Taylor; Now And Then (1995) featuring Gaby Hoffman, Christina Ricci, Thora Birch and Ashleigh Aston Moore; and last but not least, Sleepers (1996) with Brad Renfro, Joe Perrino, Geoffrey Wigdor, and Jonathan Tucker. This song by The Impressions (recorded in 1963) was featured in the 1990 TV miniseries Stephen Kings IT and is a great accompanying tune. Sadly, all four productions each feature one young performer who died prematurely, so this is also a homage to them.
