Mastering the Skies: IFR Practice & Engine Upgrade News! ✈️

In today's flight, I’m taking Mike Victor Uniform (my Cessna 172) out for some much-needed IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) practice. While the weather cleared up more than expected, we’re sticking to the IFR flight plan to sharpen those procedures, talk to ATC (Air Traffic Control), and execute an RNAV approach into Muskoka Airport (CYQA).

What’s in this video:

IFR Procedures & ATC Communication: Watch the full process from getting my IFR clearance at Oshawa (CYOO) to navigating Toronto Center’s busy airspace.
RNAV Runway 18 Approach: A step-by-step look at setting up the Avidyne IFD and ProPilot Autopilot for an RNAV (GPS) approach.
Emergency ELT Signal: Listen in as we hear reports from airliners of a weak ELT signal on 121.5.
Big Engine News: I share a major update on the 180 HP engine upgrade vs. an overhaul for Mike Victor Uniform. Get the scoop on the STC, the new prop, and my timeline for the "Firewall Forward" project!
Being an instrument-rated pilot is a journey of constant learning. Even with a "practice makes perfect-ish" approach today, I’m shaking off the winter rust and getting ready for some big changes to the plane.

Key Highlights:
0:00 - IFR Clearance & Taxi at Oshawa
2:52 - Departure & Climbing to 6,000 ft
4:04 - ELT Signal Reports on 121.5
5:00 - The "Perfect" IFR Weather Disappears
7:25 - The Big Engine Upgrade Discussion (180 HP STC)
11:45 - Setting up the RNAV Runway 18 Approach at Muskoka
17:30 - Minimums & Landing at CYQA
20:00 - Post-Flight Debrief: Shaking off the Rust
