Flying Through Smoke & Turbulence: VFR from Sault Ste Marie to Atikokan | Give Hope Wings 2025
Welcome aboard another leg of the Give Hope Wings 2025 journey, as we fly VFR from Sault Ste Marie Airport (CYAM) through wildfire smoke, turbulent skies, and stunning Lake Superior coastline views — all the way to Atikokan, Ontario. This was supposed to be a down day for the crew, but with a cold front and worsening visibility forecasted, it turned into a critical travel window.
Join me, Glen Powell, as I make the tough decision to push west ahead of weather, making fuel stops in Marathon and keeping a close eye on visibility, cloud layers, and emergency landing options. We discuss navigation over remote northern Ontario, survival gear essentials, flight following, and the challenges of flying without a clear horizon.
