GAME 2: Aqua-Yellow-Red-Purple, psteinx/Selasphorus/amitss1/teokop
Game 1 was an interesting one with a long market stall. Felt i was dominating after paying up for 13 & 29, one of the best money-making stall combos you can get. Stein buying 06 on turn 2 looks grim, but i knew better than to count him out!
Meanwhile, amitss got the 32 & 30 at cost during Step 1. Helped him recover from his rough start, and the stall helped him too.
Ended up throwing away my lead by paying close to $130 for the 20 & the 31. The long stall made this tricky for me, as i thought this could be a game where you'd need 18 cities to win. That meant i couldn't carry 29 the whole game and needed a 5-6 capacity plant before Step 3. Think paying $65 for the 20 was fine because the odds were that 26 wouldn't come, but 31 was where i blew it. That was me getting a bit greedy trying to drive up another player's cost for the plant - this desire to be the auction cop sometimes overtakes me!
Turned out i was right that this was an 18 game, and i was not one of the people who made it to 18. amitss actually did, which is impressive after his start, but it wasn't enough.
The second game that i didn't play was a lot more cut-and-dried, sadly. 26 dropped out of nowhere to Stein at cost and that was the ballgame right there. Think buying 30 was a clear mistake for Selas since 06 & 24 had been in use for so long; that buy also meant he couldn't bid for 32 later, and Stein got that at cost as well. Total blowout here.
Actually, there was one interesting moment: the turn before Step 3. amitss could have potentially built to 17 and won since Stein didn't get trash for 06 and Selas couldn't build to 12 - both of those players would've only powered 11 cities to amitss's 12. amitss storing extra trash may have cost him that last city, though Stein also built to make it extremely expensive for him. Maybe he couldn't have afforded to end even without the extra trash, not sure.
