This 325i's only mods are a welded diff, coilovers, and some adjustable arms with solid metal bushings. One of my viewers tossed me the keys and asked me to send it...will it drift well on just the stock motor and angle? Can I adapt to it coming from my matsuri car?
Big shoutout to my viewer and Texas drift Atip for letting me do a handful of laps in his 2001 E46! This BMW is a 325i model and it only has a few mods. The most important of which is a diff swap: it uses a welded automatic diff even though it's a manual car, because the automatic has a shorter final drive which prioritizes acceleration over top speed. Predictable handling is provided by a set of BC Racing digressive coilovers. Wheel hop and chassis slop in drift is eliminated by solid bushings, and subframe risers. Last but not least, the car has a couple of adjustable arms to help with getting a better alignment.
Usually drifting stock cars is pretty difficult: The lack of total angle restricts the angles you can drift at, making the experience a little bit more of a knife edge, but the bigger challenge is always the contact patch: stock setups usually have poor contact front tire patch at opposite lock, and stock cars usually don't have much static camber to counteract it which makes it difficult to catch drifts after initiating.
After a few laps I had adapted pretty well to the cars quirks and I have to say, I'm really impressed at how well it handles given how little has been done to it. Of all the cars I've drifted in stock trim, most have been somewhere between tolerable and horrid, but this BMW was actually really fun to drift and I could push pretty hard as a result. I think the E46 was even better to drift in stock trim than the S13, or at least close! I'm putting the motor and transmission back in my car this weekend and can't wait to cut some laps in it again once I get the clutch broken in.
