Nestled on the shore of the Piscataqua River is this beautiful and historical town of 22,000 New Hampshirites. The Abenaki and Algonquian Native American people thrived here for thousands of years prior to the first European settlement in 1623. Originally called 'Strawberry Banke' due to the wild strawberries flourishing alongside this freshwater sanctuary, the town was coined 'Portsmouth' in 1653. During the American Revolution, it is here where Paul Revere rode to warn that the British Royal Navy were sailing to subdue this historic port. The first US Federal shipyard opened here in 1800 and is the site of the 1905 Treaty of Portsmouth, which officially ended the Russian-Japanese war ended and earned Rosevelt the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.
