Port strikes loom in 36 states along the East and Gulf Coasts, as roughly 45,000 US longshoremen threaten to withhold their labor starting October 1, which could shut down major ports that handle about half of the goods shipped in and out of the US.

Undoubtedly, the strike would have a massive effect on buyers and sellers. Retailers could be looking at major costs to shippers for delays, and the holiday shopping industry could take a major hit. The potential strike could drive up inflation and create pressure on a fragile US economy.
