Our incredible Horticulture team has pome-granted us a taste of their incredible fruits! 😋
In the ENMAX Conservatory, we are home to a pomegranate tree (Punica granatum), which is native to Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. While we refer to pomegranates as fruit, botanically, they are berries because they come from one single flower with one ovary and typically have several seeds.
Katharine, our Manager of Horticulture – Botanical, harvested one of the pomegranates and cut it open for us. The colourful, hard outer layer is known as an epicarp, while the soft white inner layer is known as a mesocarp. The mesocarp is divided into distinct chambers which contain seeds that have a fleshy covering known as aril. Pomegranates aren’t just celebrated for their sweet taste – they are rich in vitamin C and folic acid and have been used to fight heart disease and diabetes. ❤️
