Terri-Lynne McClintic lured eight-year-old Tori Stafford from her school in Woodstock, Ont., and presented her to her boyfriend, Michael Rafferty in April 2009. They drove her to a secluded field, where she was sexually assaulted and brutally beaten to death. It was a sickening and nightmarish crime and covering it as a reporter still haunts me. She spoke several times to police, including the day Rafferty was arrested and interrogated by police — they even brought her into his interview to prove to him that she was cooperating with police. On May 24, 2009, while she was under arrest, McClintic was interrogated again by Ontario Provincial Police Detective-Sergeant Jim Smyth at the Oxford Community Police Service station in Woodstock, Ont. He spoke with her for more than eight hours. This segment was played in court at the murder trial for Rafferty on March 21, 2012.
Det.-Sgt. Jim Smyth also drew wide acclaim for prying a full confession from Col. Russell Williams, a former commander of a Canadian Forces air base, for brutal sexual assaults and murders of two women.
