The MPGD Challenge stands for Max Pokédex Gym Delay Challenge. The rules are simple: Max out your Pokédex before beating the next required gym. This includes Pokémon 'seen' and Pokémon 'caught'. To get an idea of the difficulty of the challenge, imagine fighting wild Caterpies, Metapods, and Pidgeys in Viridian Forest until you level up Squirtle to evolve into Blastoise before fighting Brock.

Glitches, Trading, or any means to obtain Pokémon not directly using the Gameboy Cartridge such as Pokémon Stadium are not allowed. For the complete description of rules, click the link below:

MPGD Challenge for Pokémon Yellow - Badge 2 (Misty)
There are many new Pokémon to catch before beating Misty including Charizard, Venasaur, and Gyarados. In total, exactly 50 Pokémon can be caught before Misty which exceeds Gary Oak's Pokédex of 40 at this point which he boasts about on the S.S. Anne. A lot of careful planning was needed for this section: the two available Moon Stones to obtain so far were used on Nidorina and Nidorino so that only one Clefairy was needed to be caught to trade for Mr. Mime on Route 2 on the other side of Diglett's Cave. If a second Clefairy was caught, Clefable could replace either Nidoqueen or Nidoking in the Pokédex by evolution using the 2 Moon Stones, but since none of those 3 Pokémon can otherwise be seen yet, it doesn't change the Pokédex total. Clefable will be gotten after Misty when another Moon Stone will become available. As far as the fossil to choose in Mt. Moon, the Helix Fossil was chosen because Kabuto can be seen in Fuchsia City outside the Safari Zone later on while Omanyte nor Omastar can be seen anywhere else in the game. Some other interesting information is Bill's computer allows you to see the Eevee evolutions, adding them to the Pokédex as 'seen'. Additionally, a guy on the S.S. Anne in the room before Gary will show you Snorlax, adding him to your Pokédex as 'seen' too. This brings the total to 50 Pokémon caught and 78 Pokémon seen before Misty!
