The MPGD Challenge stands for Max Pokedex Gym Delay Challenge. The rules are simple: Max out your Pokedex before beating the next required gym. This inlcudes Pokemon 'seen' and Pokemon 'caught' as well as anything else in the Pokedex such as the Unowndex. To get an idea of the difficulty of the challenge, imagine fighting only Pokemon in Viridian Forest until you level up Squirtle to evolve into Blastoise before fighting Brock.

Glitches, Trading, or any means to obtain Pokemon not directly using the Gameboy Cartridge such as Pokemon Stadium are not allowed. For the complete description of rules, click the link below:

Being able to use Cut after defeating Bugsy opened up a lot more area to explore and thus, many new Pokemon to catch. The Bug-Catching Contest is now available, making it necessary to play on specific days and time of days to catch all the possible Pokemon. Certain new trainers will periodically find evolution stones for you. In total, 7 stones were obtained for this part of the challenge, a very time consuming process.

One thing worth noting is which Pokemon I decided to obtain from the egg the Daycare Couple gives you. Regardless of which Pokemon I chose, I could eventually catch all those Pokemon later on like in Kanto. At this moment though, I had to make a decision how I wanted to maximize my Pokedex. Option A is choose the Pokemon that will maximize my Pokedex for this section alone. Option B is choose the Pokemon that will maximize my Pokedex before defeating the Elite 4. I decided to go with Option B because it feels more complete for the Johto section of the game as opposed to in the moment.

Had I chosen Option A, I would have manipulated a Tyrogue for Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, and Hitmontop. However, Tyrogue can be obtained later on in Johto before the Elite 4. Instead, I went with Option B which is Pichu. Pichu gives Pikachu and Raichu before the Elite 4 which you otherwise wouldn't be able to get until Kanto.
