After defeating the wild Zigzagoon that attacked Professor Birch, Brendan is given the Pokémon he used as thanks. Not long after this, he is sent by the Professor to visit his daughter, May. The person in question is spotted looking around Route 103, and when she spots Brendan, she challenges him to a battle, to give him some tips on what being a Trainer is like.


May:
Professor Birch's daughter is a Trainer in her own right and has some more experience than Brendan in the field. As such, she aims to show him what she's all about.

Mudkip:
A Water-type Pokémon. This Pokémon, like Brendan's Treecko, doesn't appear to have too much battling experience, and is only capable of using Tackle and Growl.

Torchic:
The Fire-type Pokémon. This one is quite similar to Mudkip, but looks to provide a tougher fight than the other before it. It knows Scratch and Growl.

Despite May using one Pokémon more than her neighbor, Brendan is able to win this battle. Amazed at the boy's apparent prowess, the girl decides to head back to Littleroot Town to tell her father about the battle. When the boy arrives at the lab, Professor Birch gives him a Pokédex, while May adds to it by giving her neighbor some Poké Balls to catch Pokémon. And to top it off, before Brendan can leave in proper, his mother gives him a pair of running shoes, which enable him to move faster than the ones he was wearing.
