The begins of Knowledge, Emotion, and Willpower - a perfect trio to give life to those who inhabit a world created by Arceus, Dialga, and Palkia. I really like this trio. I don't think they're my favorite regional trio (those would probably go to the Legendary Beasts/Dogs of Johto), but they make a lot of sense in the world of Sinnoh. I have to give Sinnoh mythology the credit for making sense of the Pokémon universe, since it presents a valid creation story for the Pokémon universe, and we even get to see it enacted in-game somewhat with the Sinjoh Ruins cutscene in HGSS... cool stuff!
It's been a minute since I've done a battle theme! I've said this before, but I usually have a really hard time doing battle themes from games, since they're usually so focused on rhythm and don't have a whole lot to go off of as far as harmony is concerned. This song fits that description somewhat, but I actually had a surprisingly easy time arranging this! The melody of this tune uses the Spanish Phrygian mode, which is super cool - it's most common in Spanish / Arabic / Egyptian music, and by association, it gives music a pretty exotic vibe when it's used! Not sure if any of those cultures were intended to be referenced by the usage of this mode, but I really dig it. Lots of cool harmonies that can be achieved with it!
I've become a fan of Japanese fusion jazz groups over the past few years! Some of you may have heard me mention T-SQUARE in my EWI explanation video, and since discovering T-SQUARE, I've become hip to a few other bands like H ZETTRIO, Fox Capture Plan, and Jabberloop. I love the aesthetic of these groups with a piano trio as their fundamental instrumentation somehow playing stuff that almost sounds like EDM! For this arrangement, I took inspiration from these groups, and recreate the intensity that comes with more aggressive EDM genres using only acoustic instruments. It turned out super well. This arrangement has the energy of a battle theme for sure! I also had fun challenging myself with the trumpet on this arrangement. Still learning it for sure, but I feel myself getting slightly better and better over time... and that's really all I can hope for!
