It’s spooky time, so today we’re taking a trip to Sinnoh’s best haunted mansion! If you’re watching this after 8PM your local time, give your TV a thump, maybe something cool will come out! Insaneintherainmusic's jazz cover / remix of "Old Chateau" from Pokémon Diamond / Pearl / Platinum featuring Daniel Romberger on Theremin! #yearofsinnoh

One of the things I love most about Sinnoh music is how weird it can get. Sure, Sinnoh does fill a lot of the classic Pokémon musical archetypes, with triumphant route themes, great energetic battle themes, and awesome shop themes, but I think the soundtrack really shines in the more obscure places in the game. Locations like the Old Chateau, Stark Mountain, Great Marsh, and Eterna Forest all present their own unique challenges for a composer trying to write fitting music… and Ichinose-san knocked it out of the park with the Old Chateau theme.

This theme is so distinctly un-Pokémon in nature. It’s somewhat playful and melodic, but I think the similarities end there! The meter isn’t consistent throughout the tune, there’s a lack of a strong tonal center for much of it, and the song honestly feels a bit disjointed. All these factors work really well for the musical portrayal of an old, abandoned, haunted mansion, though!

I was really excited to arrange this song because I knew it’d be a big challenge to arrange, considering how different it is from most songs I’ve arranged before on this channel. I really enjoyed using different combinations of instruments to create unique textures in this arrangement, like the background chords at 0:29 played by two flutes and a single high bass clarinet, doubling a melody in several octaves with theremin and two bass clarinets, or the sparkly unison of the rhodes and piano at 1:21. There are so many fun textures in this arrangement! Oh yeah, there’s a theremin too! In the spirit of Halloween and taking opportunities to incorporate rare instruments into my videos whenever possible, I decided to write for the theremin for the first time ever on my channel (what are the chances of ever seeing jazz theremin???) Luckily, my friend and fellow musician Danny plays the theremin, and was able to handle the crazy part I wrote for him. (Give the sheet music for his part a look, it’s pretty silly-looking!)

When planning out the arrangement, I knew I wanted to go through the loop once without too many modifications to the mood or energy, since I think the original song was so phenomenally written. I took the first time through the loop (up until about 1:40ish) to just orchestrate the original Old Chateau theme for my instrumentation, which was a lot of fun. Highlights include lots of guitar whammy bar, low bass clarinet lines, and spooky theremin! At 1:48, you’ll probably notice some of the electrical noises that I decided to incorporate into this arrangement - these are meant to represent the Pokémon Rotom, which is uniquely encountered at the Old Chateau at night time in the games! Rotom is an electric ghost that inhabits various appliances in the games, so I thought it’d very appropriate to reference it with electrical noises here and there, as well as with lots of theremin glissandos, which capture Rotom’s playful nature. To me, this arrangement up until 1:48 captures the mood and atmosphere of the player just walking around and exploring the Old Chateau. At 1:40ish, the general build and crescendo of weird noises represents the mansion “coming to life” and the awakening of Rotom. The player realizes this mansion isn’t just an empty old house, there are spooky ghosts abound too!
