This is a song I've wanted to do for a while, but never quite had the right occasion to do so! I thought that the FFVII remake's release would be a good time to cover this, even though as far as I know, Cosmo Canyon isn't actually included in this portion of the remake that's been released. Hopefully we'll see it in the future! I never actually played the original FFVII, and I don't have a PS4 to play the remake, but Uematsu's legendary status as a video game composer has made me aware of Cosmo Canyon. I think I discovered this tune a few years ago, and thought that it'd be a great one to cover whenever I got my hands on a legit upright bass... lo and behold, that time is today!
This arrangement was a fun one to put together! I gave myself the challenge of using 2 guitar parts, and no piano / rhodes parts to force myself to get better at guitar, and practice using it to fill out the harmonies in a different way than a piano part does. Since a piano usually has a wide stereo image (it's usually recorded with at least 2 microphones spanning the width of the instrument), it tends to have a very wide sound that takes up a lot of space in the mix. With the guitars, though, they're recorded in mono, don't take up as much space, and usually don't use as many notes in their voicings as a piano part does. This lets the mix breathe a bit more, and makes it easier to hear other elements. I was particularly inspired by Bob Reynolds' Guitar Band recordings (a favorite album of mine) to try this out. I'm definitely no Mark Lettieri, but I aspire to get to that level!
Apart from the guitars, I had quite a bit of fun with the low register instruments in this tune! I've been loving the bass clarinet lately, and the riff on the opening played in the upright bass sits pretty well on the bass clarinet. I ended up using a different micing technique than I normally do on bass clarinet for this particular video. Normally, I've used a ribbon mic near the top of the instrument to capture a warm and deep sound for the bass clarinet. This time, though, I used a large diaphragm condenser instead, and coupled it with my clip on mic placed right on the bell, and mixed those tones together. That way, the low notes have a bit more edge to them, but I can still get a pretty even sound across the instrument. Definitely using this technique for future recordings!
