Pokémon scalpers are now trying to flip Krispy Kreme donuts. Not cards. Not sealed ETBs. Donuts. The Krispy Kreme x Pokémon 30th anniversary collection launched August 18 with six designs, Pikachu, Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Jigglypuff, and a Poké Ball, and before the boxes even hit stores, eBay listings appeared asking $65 for an EMPTY box and close to $600 for a dozen with shipping.
To be clear: those are asking prices. There's no indication anyone actually paid them, and Krispy Kreme can just… bake more donuts. Which is exactly the point. The scalping reflex has gotten so automatic that people are now listing perishable food they'd have to mail across the country.
So let's back up and look at how we got here. Fights in retail stores. GameStop leaning into Pokémon while games sit on the shelf. Target reportedly cutting open sealed product to kill its resale value. And now, glazed dough with a Pikachu face on it.
This isn't a collecting hobby anymore. It's a speculative bubble and when the bubble starts pricing breakfast pastries, we've jumped the shark.
