Sony has cancelled PHYSINT and parted ways with Hideo Kojima, and PHYSINT is now an Xbox project. The official line is a mutual step away. Kojima's version is that PlayStation Studios told his team in mid-June they were killing the game, and that he spent the next three months finding somebody else who'd make it.
Here's where it gets interesting. Two weeks after that notice, Sony announced it's ending physical disc production for new PlayStation games in January 2028. Kojima has been the industry's loudest defender of physical media for years — he's called the all-digital future scary, warned that streaming means you don't own anything, and said you only have the right to "turn on the tap" until somebody shuts it off.
So did Sony dump Kojima because he wouldn't shut up about discs? Nobody can prove that, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But the timeline is ugly, the optics are worse, and Xbox just got a Metal Gear-shaped game handed to them for free.
In this one: the full timeline of the Sony and Kojima split, what Kojima actually said about physical media and digital ownership, why the disc shutdown matters to collectors, what PHYSINT moving to Xbox signals about where the industry is going, and whether this is Konami 2015 all over again.
