I head to Route 209, pass through Solaceon Town (14:05), then go through Route 210 and 215 before reaching the next major city, Veilstone (39:15). This city has the a major department store, so I stock up on X stat items and TMs before taking on the Gym (47:20) and its leader, Maylene (55:42). You definitely want to at least use a Guard Spec. here since her Meditite is able to lower your Pokémon's accuracy.
After defeating her, I help Dawn take on two Team Galactic Grunts (1:01:28) to retrieve her Pokédex then use the newly obtained Fly HM to head back to Hearthome City and visit Amity Square (1:06:36). After you visit, you will be able to have any Pokémon follow you in the overworld. I head to Route 212, which is a pretty big route and even has a bog that you can get stuck in, before reaching Pastoria City (1:37:00). As usual, I take on the gym (1:39:56) and its leader, Crasher Wake (1:49:43), then save shortly after.
