A petition to deport a Chinese murder suspect has attracted over 140,000 signatures on the White House website. And it has started an avalanche of appeals from Chinese citizens to the Obama administration.
The original petition calls for the deportation of Jasmine Sun, or Sun Wei. She was the roommate of Zhu Ling at Tsinghua University in 1994. Zhu was poisoned with Thallium that year, and Sun was a suspect, but never charged.
Many believed Beijing police closed the case because of Sun's family's political connections.
With more than 100,000 signatures, the Obama administration is required to respond to the petition, lodged under the "We The People" initiative.
Spurred by this success, Chinese netizens are launching other appeals. One calls for the US to forcefully protest a oil refinery plant being built in the city of Kunming.

As for the Zhu Ling case, the US government has not issued a response yet. But it did prompt Beijing police to make this announcement on Wednesday. Through its official Twitter-like Weibo account, it claimed the initial probe was done free of any outside influence. Police claims the suspect behind Zhu's poisoning was not found because there was insufficient evidence.
