At-home solar can be really expensive. The average cost to install a rooftop solar grid was $19,000 in 2021. May ties, “soft costs” — such as labor and permitting — make up a majority of the price.
So what if you could just… plug in the panels yourself?
That could be the new reality thanks to a bill making its way through the Colorado legislature.
The bill, sponsored by Democrats but receiving bipartisan support, would allow for plug-in solar systems, also called balcony solar, which is already popular in places like Germany, where you can buy the panels at IKEA.
These systems are a fraction of the cost and don’t require a professional to install. You just plug them in and they start generating electricity. And because they’re portable, these systems expand solar energy to renters or people who live in multifamily housing units like condos.
