Hear from Professor Steven Sacks, Director of MRC Centre for #Transplantation, Professor Leslie Brent, and Professor Elizabeth Simpson, as they discuss the work of Sir Peter Medawar, an Immunologist whose work on skin #transplant rejection became the foundation of modern transplantation.
Peter Medawar was asked by the MRC to look into the possibility of transplanting foreign skin onto badly burnt airmen. The grafts were destroyed very quickly, in around 10 days. When the second graft from the same donor was applied though, it was destroyed much more quickly. From these findings it was established that skin graft rejection is immunological.
This footage, produced by Figment Productions, formed part of an exhibition organised by the MRC Centre for Transplantation, King’s College London, as part of the Medical #Research Council’s centenary celebrations.
