Exploring the work of Sir Edwin Southern (Molecular Biology) through to Professor Tim Aitman (Molecular #Genetics), part of the MRC series to celebrate 100 years of life-changing discoveries.
In 1975, Molecular Biologist Sir Edwin Southern, developed the southern blot which is now a common tool used for #DNA analysis. The method enables identification of the number of copies of a gene in the genome through detection of specific DNA sequences. Other blotting methods that use similar principles have been named in reference to Southern's surname. Southern founded Oxford #Gene Technology, a company that developed DNA microarray technology.
Professor TIm Aitman is the group head of the Physiological Genomics and Medicine Group. The aim of their research is to use traditional genetics techniques along with new genome technologies and information, to allow us to better understand and manage the treatment of human disease.
