Interview with Professor Steven Sacks, Director of MRC Centre for Transplantation, and Celia Milstein, discussing the work of Cesar Milstein, a basic scientist who developed a method to clone #antibodies and started to apply them for human benefit.
Caser Milstein dedicated many years to showing that his method of producing monoclonal antibodies was applicable to many things.
The first step in a #transplant is blood typing. The #donor and recipient have to, by and large, have compatible blood groups. In the past, it was possible before to discover patient blood types by mixing two types of blood together and seeing how they reacted. This method was dependent on having a set of typing reagents which were mainly bled from human beings.
Cesar Milstein's development of monoclonal antibodies made it possible to test blood types without the need to bleed humans. It also made it possible to get the same mixture every time the test was performed, and so increased the consistency of the results.
The footage, produced by Figment Productions, formed part of an exhibition organised by the MRC Centre for Transplantation, King’s College London, as part of the Medical Research Council’s centenary celebrations.
