Exploring the work of Sir Henry Dale (Neurotransmitter) through to Dame Kay Davies (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy), part of the MRC series to celebrate 100 years of life-changing discoveries.
In 1936, physiologist Sir Henry Dale first identified the neurotransmitter. He was the first to identify the chemical acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter in the #nervoussystem and believed that signalling at the synapse was chemical. He developed Dale's principle, used to differentiate neurons according to the neurotransmitters they release. Dale received the #NobelPrize with his friend Otto Loewi in 1936 for his work.
Professor Dame Kay Davies is researching an effective treatment for a muscle disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a tragic muscle wasting disease where boys go into a wheelchair at the age of 12 and die in their 20s.
The project was concerned with how muscles function as a consequence of the sort of signals they receive from the neurotransmitters at the synapse. The #research started with identifying what is wrong in the patients, and once it was found what was missing, the next stage became trying to find a way of replacing the missing protein.
