Today I’m going to show you how I create a dramatic black and white image inspired by old Hollywood Glamour.
One of my favorite things to do is to combine the old with the new, different eras, old movies etc and then apply my style to it, paying homage to the past.
That’s what today’s image is all about! I wanted to create an image that looked like a Follies or Burlesque performer, something classic, timeless and elegant.
Lighting
This photograph uses 5 different strobes:
1. Main light: Large Umbrella with Diffusion in short light position
2. Secondary Light w/ 5 degree grid on face
3. On the background: w/ 10 degree grid to separate the subject and background
4. Bare bulb for separation and light on shoulder
5. Light behind me facing subject - Large Umbrella with Diffusion
For this shoot I was using Canon’s EOS R5 which really helped with shooting at a wide aperture due to the camera’s ability to really track the face and eye. I didn’t have to compromise between shooting wide and trying to nail the focus. #winning
Post Processing
I didn’t think the color version worked for what I was going for, so I converted it to black & white to fit the style a bit more. I fixed a few other misc things, like the feathers and cleaned up a couple of other details.
