Each year Pantone selects a color that represents our current ‘emotional state’ for the year. This color has a ton of influence in future trends trends such as fashion, material design, graphic arts and of course photography. Each year I look forward to seeing what it’s going to be so I can do a shoot with my artistic vision.
As I’ve mentioned in other videos, it’s good to participate in trends like this since art directors, editors of magazines, etc are looking for trends with the Pantone Color and I want my images to show up on their radar. This is a great way for my images to be very shareable, very relevant and represent the trends.
This year that color is “Very Peri” which is a blue with violet undertones. Pantone describes this as "A New Pantone Color Whose Courageous Presence Encourages Personal Inventiveness And Creativity".
Generally for these shoots I love to do something super monochromatic that includes many aspects of the color, from the background to makeup, lighting etc.
For this shoot I’m only going to be using 3 bare bulbs. One to light the background, one for the subject as the main light and one to fill in some shadows. I'm only using bare bulbs so it's going to be a hard light that really carves out the model's features.
For the background, I opted for a Savage Universal Orchid background as it has this beautiful bluish, purple color to it.
Obviously styling also plays a big role when doing a shoot like this, the make up, the wardrobe etc have to be reflective of the underlying concept. We did a little research and tried to find some clothing that was similar to color, but since it was still early in the year there weren’t that many options, so instead we decided to just create a fancy looking dress out of fabric!
There were a few things I could have done to make this shoot even more monochromatic, such as gelling the light but we decided makeup was the way to go and I LOVE how this came out. The model has this other worldly, Betelgeuse vibe to her.
Last but not least, after I was satisfied with the lighting I jumped over into post processing to pull out some of the colors and to desaturate things to make the tones a bit more even.
There’s no right or wrong way to do a shoot like this, it’s all about stretching your creative muscles and giving the concept your artistic interpretation. It's just fun to participate and every year you have something that can totally influence your shoots moving forward!
