Philippine Army Brahmos Missile Project POSTPONED
According to a news release published by One News on July 21, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said about P13 billion earmarked for the military modernization program had been diverted to the budget for the pandemic response as the government prioritized health capacity and social amelioration programs.
Defense Secretary Lorenzana said, “The COVID-19 pandemic is now occupying most of our time.” “We are lucky that we have not had any disasters, no typhoons yet, no earthquake, whatever, and hopefully, before calamities come and visit us, we will be able to fight this pandemic.”
Lorenzana did not specify which projects under the three-phased, 15-year P300-billion modernization plan were affected by the reprioritization, although the military has been spending a lot of logistical runs and deployment for humanitarian assistance operations.
Meanwhile, an Army colonel who requested anonymity told The Philippine STAR that the government has postponed the signing of a P10-billion deal with the Indian government for the acquisition of an unspecified number of Brahmos anti-ship cruise missiles for its off-shore defense capability.
The Colonel said, “I am not at liberty to disclose the real reason why the (government-to-government) contract was not signed in May even if the Philippine Army already has the funds for the project.”
The Philippine Army has been lagging behind the Air force and the Navy in acquiring missiles to upgrade its capabilities. But there were speculations that the missile project was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
